King Abdullah International Gardens
Client: King Abdullah
Location: Riyadh, Saudi Central Region
This is set to create the largest series of botanical landscapes in the world. The gardens – covering 160 hectares (395 acres) – aim to re-create the 400 million-year-old history of the Earth’s plants, trees and flowers. Given this theme, it is no surprise that the design of the gardens is mindful of ecological concerns and sustainable development.
Renewable energy sources are being considered and evaluated for the project. This scheme design is a joint-venture between Barton Willmore and Buro Happold, studio DNA’s role involved designing and overseeing the ETFE skin and associated structure of the 1 kilometre diameter bio-domes. This project is due to be completed in 2010.
